Multi-Professional Preceptorship
Overview
What is the main aims of the preceptorship.
- Preceptorship is a period of structured transition for newly registered clinical healthcare professionals, international recruits and return to practice colleagues.
- The main aim of preceptorship is to welcome and integrate newly registered professionals into their new team and place of work. It helps newly qualified professionals to develop their confidence as an autonomous professional, refine skills, values, and behaviours and to continue on their journey of lifelong learning (DoH 2010)
- A positive preceptorship experience can increase confidence and provide a sense of belonging for the preceptee. By offering an effective preceptorship programme employers can improve recruitment and retention of their clinical workforce. Attracting and retaining skilled clinicians is important for delivery of high quality, safe and effective care (NMC 2020).

- The North West Multi-Professional Preceptorship Framework has been developed by the North West Region Multi-Professional Preceptorship Community of Practice Group.
- The ultimate aim of the framework is to support the creation of a sustainable workforce across the North West; by standardising the variation of Preceptorship offers available across the region and delivering an equitable approach to transition, for all newly registered clinical healthcare professionals regardless of the organisation they work in.
- A Northwest Multi-Professional Preceptorship standardised portfolio document has been developed in partnership with NW stakeholders and has been aligned to the North West Multi-Professional Preceptorship Framework.
- In 2019 the Northwest Multi-Professional Preceptorship Community of Practice Group proposed to test the feasibility of using a standardised preceptorship portfolio document, aligned to the North West Multi-Professional Preceptorship Framework within an electronic system.
- The PARE system, which is already effectively used to support learners across GM, has successfully piloted preceptorship portfolio utilising bespoke documentation for preceptees and additional functionalities to monitor preceptorship activity and compliance. Further funding has been secured to continue the project and involve other organisations. If you are interested in joining this project, please contact the project coordinator [email protected] for further information.
The aim of the Greater Manchester Survival Toolkit is to enhance the preceptorship period of newly qualified healthcare registrants by supporting the development of some of the ‘softer skills’ required in the first year of registration. The 5 key survival tips explored are:
Know yourself and others
Stay healthy and happy
Think before you act
Be a team player
Communicate effectively

The aim of the project is to provide organisations with supportive tools to enable them to deliver a set of standardised, fundamental concepts of preceptorship, but retaining a flexibility to implement innovative approaches.
