INTroduction

It is well known that, predominantly, the decision of career pathway is chosen whilst on clinical placement during training. Therefore, nationally, we have turned on all the taps to increase the flow of nurses coming into primary care by facilitating undergraduate nursing placements.

However, access to primary care placements can be limited, undergraduate nurses have not benefited from the unique opportunities that primary care can offer and therefore they rarely consider practice nursing as a viable career pathway. Considering that 33.4% of General Practice Nurses are due to retire by 2020, it is important that undergraduates seriously consider a career in primary care. Through the work of the Greater Manchester Training Hub, along with help from General Practices, we are changing the attitudes towards a career in primary care.
