Every Breath Counts
We are delighted to invite you to join this short yet comprehensive course on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), specifically developed for those dedicated to caring for individuals diagnosed with COPD within the social care sector.
COPD is not just a smoker’s cough, it’s a serious lung condition that affects millions, silently deteriorating their quality of life. Let’s breathe life into awareness and action against COPD.
An estimated 1.2 million people are living with COPD but almost TWICE as many are living with undiagnosed COPD.
In terms of diagnosed cases, this makes COPD the second most common lung disease in the UK, after asthma. British Lung Foundation research suggests that prevalence is growing.
The number of people who have ever had a diagnosis of COPD has increased by 27% in the last decade, from under 1,600 to nearly 2,000 per 100,000.
This could mean that more undiagnosed cases are being found, or that the disease is becoming more common.
Earlier research has indicated that up to two-thirds of people with COPD remain undiagnosed.
An acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) is a sudden worsening of symptoms, such as increased breathlessness, coughing, and sputum production, that typically requires additional medical treatment.
AECOPDs are most frequently initiated by viral infections, which compromise the respiratory system and pave the way for secondary bacterial infections.
This succession of viral and bacterial attacks can exacerbate the patient’s condition, necessitating more intensive treatment and posing a risk of further lung function decline.
Caring for Individuals with COPD:
A Course for Social Care Workers
This course aims to bridge the gap between medical knowledge and practical care techniques, ensuring you are well-equipped with the understanding and skills needed to provide exceptional support to those living with COPD.
COPD represents a significant challenge not only to those directly affected but also to the caregivers striving to improve their quality of life. This condition, marked by its progressive nature, requires a subtle approach to care, one that balances medical management with the day-to-day needs of individuals.
Throughout this course, we will delve into the pathophysiology of COPD, shedding light on how it affects the respiratory system and the individual’s overall well-being. You will gain insight into the latest care practices, focusing on non-pharmacological interventions, the importance of a supportive environment, and techniques to enhance communication and emotional support for those in your care.
Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge to identify symptoms and exacerbations early, understand the comprehensive needs of those with COPD, and collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive care plan. We will explore strategies to adapt living environments, promote physical activity safely, and support the psychological well-being of individuals with COPD, all within the framework of social care.
By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of COPD and be equipped with practical tools and strategies to enhance the care you provide. We are excited to guide you through this learning journey, enhancing your capabilities to make a significant difference in the lives of those you care for within the social care footprint.

Frailty – Its everyone’s business
Frailty is a chronic condition related to the ageing process in which multiple body systems lose their in-built reserves. Older adults who are living with frailty are less able to cope when stressor events strike, such as acute illness. 50% of adults over 85 are thought to live with frailty in the United Kingdom (Age UK, 2022). Optimal management of frailty requires a thoughtful, compassionate, and person-centred approach to the multifaceted underlying factors which are driving the frailty process.
Managing frailty can no longer be considered the preserve of geriatricians, thus it is necessary that all health care professionals working with older persons living with frailty, have good knowledge of managing frailty appropriately. This training focuses on identifying frailty, optimal management of frailty and the NHS strategies to help those living with frailty to live well.
